Young Women’s Moonrite
The Traditional Girl’s Moonrite is an all-night trial and rite of passage for young women who have reached menarche and their mothers (or other adult sponsors) that encourages responsibility, positive body image, empowerment through concrete accomplishments and community involvement, sisterhood, and introspection.
The annual Moonrite will be held this year, in the red tent behind the Connection Canopy, from 7 PM on Friday through the morning of Saturday. The Rite is presented by Amazon Sisterhood, the women who have been through this Rite over the last twenty years. The Rite is funded by the Sisterhood and the community, there is no charge to the maidens or their families this is our gift to the newest members of our community.
Preparing and customizing the event for each candidate is a long process that can take months, so we ask that our candidates pre-register for the event. In order to provide the most personal Rite for each maiden, there is limited space available for candidates. Register early to ensure your candidacy!
Note: This ritual will be performed at Beltania 2017 only if there is sufficient interest. Please check back for more details closer to the festival date.
Young Men’s Coming of Age
The Young Men’s Coming of Age at Beltania is a rite of passage that seeks to aid young men in finding their paths in society. Our goal is to help each Young Man reveal to himself the character and nature of his path, not to dictate it to him, as each one’s path is unique. Our goal is to make “becoming a Man” more meaningful to each participant than what ordinary society expects of us.
This will touch on many aspects of Male Archetypes that have been handed to us, as well as some that may be new, as the elders challenge the young men’s preconceived notions of what it is to be Man in our modern diverse culture.
The Coming of Age Rite of Passage will unfold over the course of the weekend in several times and places: some of service, some of introspection, some of consultation, some of presentation, and some of sharing of themselves. Each candidate will have opportunities to be questioned by elders and recent graduates, in settings both casual and sacred, and a group sweat will be led by our Sweat Leaders on Saturday afternoon.
We call to the young men that are feeling the draw to be more than a kid, more than a teen, more than a drone in this world. We call to the parents that feel their teen is ready for a look at intentionally shaping their future role in this culture.
Croning Ritual for Older Women
The Crone ritual is only for older women who choose to step forward with beauty and blessings to the Crone phase of our lives. This is a solemn rite of passage. We honor Maid and Mother, and this ritual is for the Crones, women who are past mothering. We will meet for a discussion of about 30 minutes and then the ritual will start. No latecomers will be admitted. Ritual garb is appropriate. Creating a safe space for this rite of passage will be foremost, and we ask that only older women attend.
Note: This ritual will be performed at Beltania 2017 on Friday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Please check back for more details closer to the festival date.
